Traditional Irish Music Lessons at the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center, Danbury, Connecticut

This Session ended October 27th. It ran a little longer because classes had to be cancelled a couple of times for reasons that were unavoidable.

A new Semester began in November and will end on December 15th, 2012. New students are now being accepted for the next Session in January.

***See new, updated blog above***

Tinwhistles are inexpensive instuments that can be found online for around $15.  If you don't want to buy online, I can provide one for you for about the same price if you let me know in time.

The flute I use is a traditional, keyless wooden instrument.   Besides being keyless, it differs from a silver flute in many ways, not least of which, is the warm, woody and haunting tone that it elicits.  It also has quite a big sound in comparison to a silver flute.

Lessons are also taught on Skype once the beginner has some basic knowledge of the instrument and a couple of tunes down.  Or, if you already play and just need some pointers, Skype may be the way to go.

**I am currently putting new students on a waiting list as the classes are full in Danbury**.

  3. Lessons are also conducted over Skype! I like to get the student started on some basic methods before I begin lessons over Skype.

  4. Currently, working on some nice O'Carolan pieces with my students. I like to do the Planxty Irwin followed by Fanny Powers both on Flute and Whistle. It's also very pretty when played on Bouzouki or Mandolin.

  6. Yesterday, was another exciting day of lessons at the Center. I had a brand, new student that had never before even handled the Tinwhistle .....other than looking at it after buying one. The class went really well and by the end of class, she was not only playing the scales, but even played the first part of a little tune. It's going to be interesting, since she's left-handed. I'm going to see how it goes and if it's too uncomfortable for her, then maybe she can just reverse things.

  7. As far as this page is concerned, I'm trying to figure out a way to upload at least some kind of audio on here. If by any chance, someone comes in here and knows how to do that, feel free to post directions for me.

    1. Rita, you and students each open accounts (preferably free ones, free at first, small file size, then possibly upgrade to paid larger storage), record music in any of the internet audio storage servers and then link to it from blog (look at other bloggers to see what they do)

Of course, some individuals may have good music composition softwares on their computers which could also upload a link to internet/blog. I am no expert, but, I did want to suggest help. ytliek

  8. Lots of great Flute tunes were played yesterday during class. We not only worked on Barndances, but ventured into some Waltzes too. So nice playing outdoors on the Patio, plenty of people stop to listen as they stroll down the street.

I would recommend Rita to anyone wanting to learn how to play Traditional Irish Music. She is a great teacher for people of all ages. She is great with kids - very encouraging and patient! She herself is an excellent musician and it is a pleasure just to listen to her when she plays.

  14. I believe that I forgot to mention on here that I also conduct lessons over the Skype network. However, if you're a beginner student, it's best, no, it's actually required for you to be there in person for the first couple of lessons. You need to get the the basics down before moving on to tunes.

  20. The Workshop at the GDICC, (Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center) last Saturday week had a good turnout of beginner students and was quite a success. Everyone went away with a couple of tunes and some have already started attending class. Because I'm won't be giving any lessons there over the Summer, I will be available on Skype or private lessons only. If you'd like to register for the next beginner/intermediate class starting up on September 8th, send me an email with your information and your playing skill if any, and I will contact you with more detail. The Class will run for 6 weeks for 45 minutes and the cost is just $100.00. I will offer a discount for more than 1 family member.
